Sometimes, coming up with a business idea is the hardest part. T-shirts? Prints? Social media management? I wanted to tell you how I came up with the January Empire idea,
Ok, so I tricked you a little bit. I’d had a dream about sitting in a badass corner office with a January Empire sign on the wall, three little branches coming off it and I woke up knowing EXACTLY what my future was going to look like.
But I had to come up with the business idea to actually make it work. I knew that the three branches were going to be a clothing brand, social media management and events.
I knew that a clothing range had to be part of the empire because I never felt part of the fashion world. I hated trends because I had simple tastes. I just wanted a load of t-shirts and hoodies that I could wear with my jeans or joggers and still feel ace.
I love slogans and bold images so knew that would be the focus for the clothing company. I just had to find a way to get them printed until I could do them myself.
I’d dabbled in events since I was 18, taking part in an internship with the wedding coordinator at a local venue. I was also Vice President of the Raising and Giving society, planning all sorts of events at uni. It was AWESOME. I loved taking a tiny seed of an idea and turning it into an event.
This is one that I’m not super confident with, but I know that there are so many amazing social media managers out there and I want to give them protection of working for a company instead of being self employed. There are some bloggers who just SMASH social media and I’d love them to be able to share their talents with companies and get the recognition they deserve.
Where do You start?
When you wake up in the morning, what’s the first thing you think about? Probably “turn off the damn alarm, I might call in sick”. Am I right?
That’s how you know when you need to be working for yourself. What do you love doing? What would you be happy to do and not get paid for it every single day?
Because that’s how it’ll be at the start. You won’t get paid for it until a little while in so make sure you love it. You will also be doing it every single second you’re awake so you have to love it.
Sit down with a notebook and write down everything that you’d love to do with your life. Don’t think about whether it’s possible right now, just write it down. When I did this exercise, I wrote down that I wanted to help people find who they were, cause a stir, create something that wasn’t asking people to be sheep…
Name your business idea
You’re not necessarily naming your business, but you’re naming your business idea. Mine was always going to be January Empire because I’m building an empire and I have a presence as This January Girl, so what’s your business idea called?
This is where you start narrowing down your thoughts and finding out what it is you really want to do. It can be something as pin-point as “I want to sell embroidered tote bags” or something slightly wider like “I want to create a community of badass women”. Write down all of the names you can think of.
If there’s one that you keep coming back to, or one that you can imagine as a logo, that’s the name you should go with.
Tip: check NameChk to see if the domain and social handles are available.
Well that depends on what you’ve decided that you want to do.
Do you need money to start? Do you need help to start? Do you need to buy things to start? Can you do it from your phone? How will the business scale? Where is the business in 5, 10, 20 years? How will you market your business? Which social media accounts will you need?
