Easy Ways To Stick To A Budget

One of my favourite quotes is “treat yourself”. I’m also terrible at budgeting my money: if I see something, I want to buy it now.

This is me every month when I get paid. My Mastercard and I skip to Primark and pick up things I know I’m never going to need so here are a few simple tips on how you can stick to a budget.

How to Stick To A Budget

This is the hardest question to answer because life happens – you could have a friend’s wedding or your car breaks down or you forgot about the money you owe someone, but if you want to be financially free, you need to learn to stick to a budget.

Are you saving for a house deposit (like me)? Saving for a car (like me)? Or saving for a holiday (seriously, what’s a holiday?), then you really need to work out your money situation and stick to a budget.

Cash is King

I’m part of the plastic generation that just hands over their bank card and prays it doesn’t get declined. It’s even worse now with contactless and Apple Pay, but when shopping with cash, you know exactly how much you have left. Then you can cry into your £5 latte about how poor you are.

Change The Date

I need to know how much I actually have to spend so I don’t get spend-happy (I still do, but shhh!).

My best advice would be to make sure all of your bills come out on the same day (preferably the first of the month) so you know what you have left. Some of my blog bills come out at random dates and they always catch me by surprise, but because they’re quite small, they don’t matter quite so much.

Have A Separate Bank Account

I’ve made the decision to open a Monzo account while I keep my Lloyds account because the temptation of my savings is too much sometimes. I give myself an allowance and once it’s gone, it’s gone. I’ve even hidden the Lloyds app on my phone so I don’t just dip in and out of it.

Whilst Monzo is the one that I use, there are SO many that you can move to. Have a look on Money Saving Expert because that guy really knows what he’s talking about…

Educate Yourself

Knowledge is power so start to educate yourself. No, you don’t have to read the Financial Times (in fact I would recommend avoiding it like the plague…) but there are so many places out there that can give you advice.

The two that I’ve been using are Money Saving Expert and Money by Laura Whateley. MSE gives you real advice, in real terms and even gives you tips on how to slash your bills.

Money is one of the best birthday presents I’ve ever received. I heard about it on a YouTube video and I love it already. It’s written in a matter-of-fact and friendly way, teaching you everything you wish you’d learned at school. It’s even split into chapters so you can just read the part that you need to know about at that time.

Simplicity

Hands up who feels amazing after a long bath with bubbles and a book? Yeah me!

The best things are the thing you do for yourself, so go to your local supermarket and get yourself some things for a bath. Grab your laptop or tablet and watch something fun while you soak in the warm water – what else do you need? And practically free!

Simple treats can be the best. Allowing yourself to switch off for an hour, a day or even a week can be a luxury treat without breaking the bank! I personally prefer the simple treats, a tea snacks and a bubble bath over louboutins any day haha! x
